The Story of Divine Blessing

Divine Blessing is a woman from Eastern DR Congo, Bukavu. Atrocities caused by traumas of war forced Divine to leave her country with five children from the age of eight years and under with a pregnancy. She was on a road without knowing the destination. She witnessed corpses and a lot of innocent blood of neighbors and family members who were killed. Furthermore, Divine was raped many times and due to the traumas she underwent - it was only right to leave her country behind. She left with no money nor any traveling documents.

Divine now became homeless, hopeless, helpless and restless and began sleeping under the trees on the streets and they ate from dustbins. Life on the streets was a fearful existence. The children would always question Divine as to where they were heading? Mentioning that they were tired, hungry, and so on. Divine became raped once again by different criminals in her predicament under the pregnancy and she wanted to commit suicide due to all the traumas. The pregnancy was bleeding and her condition worsened.

Some people were mocking her and others advised that she should commit abortion but Divine refused. As it was, Divine talked to herself in tears, saying, “God where are you? I have heard that you exist but why have you forgotten me in my affliction? Change my life.”

Divine now became homeless, hopeless and restless and began sleeping under the trees on the streets and they ate from dustbins.

Soon, Divine thought of jumping into the river and end her life but as she looked at her children, she cried in sorrow as she did not plan to leave her children behind. Divine said, “God, you divided the red sea into two. Do the same for me as well”. By the grace of God, a fisherman helped her and the children to cross over to Namibia.

Life in the refugee camp in Namibia was unbearable. The agony of living as a refugee was intolerable. The child she had in the womb was born in the refugee camp. A day came on which her children were starving and Divine then went into the bush together with two of her children to collect firewood as to cook beans for them. Unfortunately, she met three Namibian criminals, they assaulted Divine and one of her children and they also raped Divine while she was on her period.

Life on the streets was a fearful existence for Divine and her children. They were terrified, tired, hungry, thirsty, sick and very traumatized.

Divine and her children crossed Tanzania, Zambia, and ended up in Namibia. In Zambia, Divine was now a foreigner and she knew not the language of the country. Divine found herself at the Zambezi river and was devastated as she knew not how to cross the river and she had no documents. In her time of bitterness she lost hope and wondered if God is real. She then came to herself and asked God for four things:

1) God, give us daily food

2) God, give us a home address, even in prison as shelter

3) God, give my children education

4) God, if you change my life, I will tell the world about your goodness

After police investigation, Divine was taken to the hospital by the Namibian police. Divine and her children were in their custody. Due to all the pains, traumas and insecurities, Namibian government together with UNHCR decided to send Divine and her children as quota refugees to Sweden.

In Sweden, Divine and her children were welcomed very well. Divine´s life has changed and she has decided to stand firm and tell the world that God is real and also what the Lord has done for her. Her testimony is that God has answered. Divine Blessing is the founder of Divine Hope Centers, caring for abandoned women and orphans in dire need of hope.
